Digital Machine Operator - Shift Working
Main Purpose of Job
The primary role is the safe operation of the digital
colour and monochrome print machines and ancillary
equipment in a cost effective and efficient manner to
produce printed work at the defined quality standard.
Machines include Oce; DocuTech; Nuvera; Indigo; Nipson
etc.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
- To prepare, set up and operate the machine, undertaking all necessary quality checks to ensure conformance to correct specification.
- To process, impose and prepare print files for production on sheet fed digital systems.
- To identify and load jobs, ensuring that correct stock is used.
- To ensure that the working environment is safe, clean and healthy through the correct use of equipment and supplies, so as to eliminate the risk of accidents and incidents.
- To carry out day-to-day maintenance and cleaning of machines to ensure safe and efficient working in line with manufacturers’ schedules.
- To create finished work meeting all customer requirements following ISO9001 procedures with zero defects and spoilage and achieving specified levels of productivity.
- To be able to work alone using own initiative to resolve operational issues, and contributing to the process of continually improving work methods and techniques.
- To undertake self-checking and monitoring of work produced, using own initiative to ensure quality and specification conformance.
CommunicationThe jobholder will also maintain
effective contacts within the Company: Bindery;
Despatch; Account Managers; Suppliers; Warehouse;
Machine Room and various internal customers.
To liaise effectively with Technical Support teams at
the various equipment suppliers.
Conditions of EmploymentHours of work: 0600 –
1400h and 1400 – 2200h. Alternate week shifts, 5 days
per week – Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours total.
26 days annual leave plus Bank Holidays.
£415.57 per week, including shift premium, plus
punctuality bonus and overtime when available, paid
weekly by credit transfer.

Person SpecificationPhysical
The job holder will work mainly alone. There will be
some manual handling – paper, chemicals etc.
AttainmentsThe jobholder will have previous
working knowledge of computers, and must have an
understanding of networks and servers.
Knowledge of digital imaging technology – magnetography
– and cold flash fusion techniques is desirable,
although full training will be provided.
ECDL Level 2 qualification is desirable.
General Intelligence
The jobholder will often work alone and will need to
be able to operate multi – pieces of equipment
simultaneously.
Special Aptitudes
Good communication skills are essential, as the
jobholder has to liaise effectively with other key
Departments – particularly the Bindery Team Leader.
Computer literacy and an understanding of networks and
servers is essential.
A practical understanding of handling and making ready
different types of paper is desirable. There will also
need an appreciation of the attributes and performance
of paper types. An understanding of imposition and paper
folding techniques is desirable.
Interests
The jobholder should be able to solve operation problems in a practical manner.
Disposition
The jobholder should be self motivated and directed, and be able to work alone without close personal supervision. Should be able to instruct, monitor and motivate Bindery Assistants as required.
Circumstances
The jobholder should be prepared to undertake training as required, and maintain/update their technological skill and knowledge.
