Bindery Assistant - Twilight Shift


Main Purpose of Job

To provide general multi-skilled assistance within the Bindery and other areas within the factory.


Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Working individually and as a team member to turn flat printed sheet into finished product using mechanical gathering; stand alone mechanical operations and bench-work.
  • Setting of machines and equipment.
  • To undertake self-checking and monitoring of work produced, using own initiative to ensure quality and specification conformance.
  • To create finished work meeting all customer requirements following ISO 9001 procedures with zero defects and spoilage and achieving specified levels of productivity.
  • To work flexibly in other work areas as required, i.e. Despatch and Fulfilment.
  • To work as a team member, supporting and training other team members as required, and contributing to the process of continually improving work methods and techniques. An enthusiasm to acquire new skills is a key attribute.
  • To assist with the cleaning of machine working areas under the guidance of a Machine Operator.

Communication

The jobholder reports to the Shift Team Leader for all general matters related to the Bindery, with the day-to-day work allocation carried out by the appropriate Machine Operator and/or Bindery Trainers where appropriate.
The jobholder will also maintain effective contacts within the Company: Machine Room; Warehouse; Despatch and various internal customers.

Conditions of Employment

Hours of work: 1700 – 2200h, evenings as specified.
26 days annual leave plus Bank Holidays pro-rata to number of evenings worked.
£6.56 per hour (18 years and over); £5.27 per hour (age 17); £3.40 per hour (age 16), paid weekly by credit transfer.

 

Person Specification

Physical

Experience of working in a manufacturing environment is desirable. This is a role where there will be considerable lifting and carrying of heavy items. Much of the working day can be spent standing whilst carrying out manual tasks such as loading machines with paper etc., and packing/moving boxes of completed work. Will use pallet trucks to move raw material around the manufacturing area.


Education and Qualifications

Should have undertaken a basic secondary education leading to acceptable level of literacy and numeracy.


Skills

  • Able to understand and interpret written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to adopt a flexible approach to changing work demands, and to respond accordingly.
  • The jobholder may be required to assist with the training of other staff.

Personal Qualities

  • Must have the ability to communicate well with Shift Team Leaders, Machine Operators and work colleagues.
  • Must be able to operate independently and within a team environment, supporting colleagues as appropriate.
  • Must be highly self-motivated.
  • Must be able to manage own work and operate to deadlines with minimum supervision.
  • Should be able to show initiative to ensure quality and specification conformance.
