Bindery Machine Operator - Class 1


Main Purpose of Job

The safe operation of a range of machines in the Bindery Department

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • To operate a range of Class 1 machines such as Binder; Saddle Stitcher; Trimmer; Kugler; Guillotine etc, undertaking all necessary quality checks to ensure conformance to correct specification.
  • To operate a range of Class 2 machines as required.
  • To ensure that the working environment is safe, clean and healthy through the correct use of equipment and supplies, so as to eliminate the risk of accidents and incidents.
  • To carry out day-to-day maintenance and cleaning of machines to ensure safe and efficient working.
  • To create finished work meeting all customer requirements following ISO9001 procedures with zero defects and spoilage and achieving specified levels of productivity.
  • To work as a team member, supporting other members as required, and contributing to the process of continually improving work methods and techniques.
  • To undertake self-checking and monitoring of work produced, using own initiative to ensure quality and specification conformance.

Communication

The Jobholder reports to the Team Leader, and is part of a team of Operators where job/role flexibility is a key component.
The jobholder will also maintain effective contacts within the Company: Machine Room; Despatch; Account Managers; Suppliers; Warehouse; and various internal customers.
The jobholder may supervise; lead or train other staff.

Conditions of Employment

Hours of work: 0600 – 1400h and 1400 – 2200h. Alternate week shifts, 5 days per week – Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours total.
26 days annual leave plus Bank Holidays.
£374.61 per week start rate, including shift premium, plus punctuality bonus and overtime when available, paid weekly by credit transfer.

Person Specification

Physical

The jobholder will work mainly alone. There will be some manual handling associated with the job. Much of the working day can be spent standing whilst operating various items of machinery. Some of the work can involve repetitive hand/arm movements for part/all of the shift. Pallet trucks will be used to move raw material around the manufacturing area.

Education and Qualifications

The Jobholder should have undertaken a basic secondary education leading to acceptable levels of literacy and numeracy.

Skills

  • Trained and experienced at Class 2 Bindery Machine standard.
  • Experience or an interest in working with machines is desirable.
  • A practical understanding of handling different paper types is desirable.
  • The jobholder may be required to train other staff as required.

Personal Qualities

  • The jobholder should have the ability to work alone, but also to operate within a team environment.
  • Will direct the work of others i.e. Bindery Assistants.
  • Good communication skills are essential.
  • Must have the ability to solve problems and share information with other Bindery staff; Bindery Trainers and the Bindery Team Leaders and Manager.
  • Must be self-motivated.
  • Should be able to use initiative to ensure quality and specification conformance.
  • Must have a flexible approach, and will be part of a team where the job role may change within the Bindery Operator team.
  • Should be able to document training provided and maintain a log.
  • Should be able to maintain effective contacts within the Company – Machine Room; Despatch; Warehouse: and other internal contacts.

The jobholder should be prepared to undertake training as required within the Bindery and elsewhere, and continually maintain/update their skills and knowledge.
